About the company
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Staff Engineer based in India.
This is a high-impact engineering role focused on making AI-powered compliance and trust systems reliable, defensible, and scalable.
Responsibilities
- Build trustworthy AI and agent systems: Design and evolve production-grade LLM and autonomous agent systems that can take multi-step actions against real data and users while meeting rigorous reliability and safety expectations.
- Establish AI evaluation infrastructure: Build evaluation harnesses, golden datasets, regression suites, release gates, and drift-detection capabilities that continuously measure agent quality and prevent unreliable outputs from reaching customers.
- Design defensible data systems: Create architectures that preserve temporal state, provenance, and traceability from source systems through to customer-facing outputs and audit packages.
- Handle uncertainty and failure safely: Ensure systems distinguish clearly between passing, failing, and unknown states, particularly when integrations experience partial or upstream failures.
- Shape technical architecture: Provide technical direction across areas such as tenant isolation, enterprise identity, high-scale integrations, inference economics, and regulatory domain modeling.
- Drive engineering standards: Establish practices and architectural principles that improve the quality, reliability, and scalability of AI-enabled systems across the wider engineering organization.
- Influence cross-functional decisions: Partner closely with Engineering, Product, Security, and Customer Experience teams, using strong technical judgment to challenge assumptions and guide decisions.
- Lead through influence: Operate without direct reports while setting direction, mentoring engineers, solving complex technical problems, and helping teams navigate challenging deliveries.
- Balance strategy and execution: Adapt between architectural leadership, hands-on engineering, problem solving, and delivery leadership according to the needs of the organization.
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years operating at Staff Engineer level or equivalent, with a demonstrated ability to influence technical direction beyond your immediate team.
- Proven experience building production AI/LLM or agent-based systems that take meaningful autonomous actions and have measurable impact on real workflows.
- Strong understanding of designing AI systems where the model is treated as an untrusted subsystem, using constrained outputs, independent verification, escalation thresholds, and safeguards.
- Significant depth in at least two of the following areas: production LLM and agent systems; temporal and provenance data modeling; high-fan-out integration reliability; multi-tenant architecture and enterprise identity; inference cost optimization; or domain modeling for complex regulatory rules.
- Demonstrated ability to measure and improve system quality through metrics such as failure rates, evaluation results, cost, reliability, and operational impact.
- Strong architectural and systems-thinking capabilities, with experience designing scalable, reliable, and maintainable software platforms.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively with ambiguous, technically complex challenges.
- Strong communication and written documentation skills, particularly in a remote-first environment where clarity and asynchronous collaboration are essential.
- Ability to influence and challenge senior stakeholders without formal authority, while remaining pragmatic and focused on solutions.
- A hands-on engineering mindset and willingness to move between strategic architecture and detailed implementation when required.
- Strong sense of ownership, curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to improve engineering practices across an organization.
