About the company
- CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world's leading laboratories for particle physics.
- The Storage and Data Management Group in CERN's IT Department operates core services for LHC and non-LHC experiments.
- Work on core data storage and management capabilities enabling scientific progress.
Responsibilities
- Management and operations of distributed disk storage, block, object and filesystem services based on mainstream open-source technologies (Ceph).
- Participate in the evolution of architecture and design of storage services for CERN and software-defined storage technology with Open Source.
- Integrate, troubleshoot and maintain distributed disk storage systems at scale, across multiple availability zones and data centres.
- Contribute to documentation, development, optimisation and further automation of storage services.
- Contribute to change management, incident response, and user support.
- Liaise with key stakeholders inside and outside of the IT department.
Requirements
- Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Computer Science or a related field.
- Strong interest in service management, including operations, troubleshooting, user support, configuration and automation.
- Deep understanding of Linux operating system performance, tuning and administration.
- Deep understanding of architecture of distributed storage and filesystems (e.g. NFS, CephFS).
- Debugging and diagnosing issues in complex distributed environments, spanning hardware, network, and software layers.
- Demonstrated experience in C++ software development of distributed storage systems (preferably with Ceph source code).
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Nice to have: good knowledge of scripting languages.
