About the company
Roblox builds tools and platforms for a global community creating immersive digital experiences. Its data infrastructure powers analytics, machine learning, and product decisions across a platform serving more than 200 million daily active users.
Responsibilities
- Set the long-term architecture and evolution of the metrics platform, including metric registration, discovery, versioning, ownership, dependencies, and governance.
- Design contracts and standards that let analytics and compute systems consume metric definitions consistently, independently of execution engine.
- Guide the architecture for turning logical metric definitions into physical materializations and serving locations across Spark, Flink, OLAP, and feature platforms.
- Align Data Infra, data engineering, analytics, and ML teams; resolve architectural boundaries and dependencies; and drive adoption of shared platform capabilities.
- Set expectations for scalability, observability, resilience, data correctness, and operational ownership across the metric lifecycle.
- Mentor engineers, improve technical decision-making across teams, and create leverage through reusable designs, APIs, and engineering practices.
- Explore self-service and agent-assisted workflows for metric discovery and use, with validation and governance.
- Embed AI/ML capabilities in the data platform, leveraging LLMs for data discovery and generation and building autonomous, self-serve platform interaction mechanisms.
Requirements
- B.S. equivalent in computer science or sufficient experience.
- 10+ years building, designing, testing, and maintaining production-grade, large-scale distributed systems.
- Extensive experience designing and delivering production-grade distributed systems or data platforms.
- Record of setting technical direction for systems spanning multiple teams or product areas.
- Deep experience in data platforms, metadata and catalog systems, semantic layers, analytical systems, or large-scale data processing.
- Strong engineering skills in Java, Go, Scala, or Python, and experience designing reliable services and APIs.
- Strong understanding of SQL and familiarity with Spark, Flink, Trino, Druid, or comparable technologies.
- Ability to turn ambiguous cross-team problems into an architecture and execution plan teams can adopt.
- Excellent technical communication and influence, including building alignment, explaining tradeoffs, and guiding decisions without direct authority.
- Proven ability to influence technical direction across a large engineering organization, lead consensus on complex architectural initiatives, and champion successful multi-quarter projects.
- History of accountability in high-ambiguity environments: defining technical requirements, unblocking dependencies, rallying engineers across pods, and steering complex projects from initial concept through production stability.
- Nice to have: experience building metric or semantic platforms, data catalogs, lineage systems, or data governance capabilities; making metric definitions usable across multiple query or compute engines; contributing to open-source data infrastructure projects; or operating data infrastructure at consumer-internet scale.
Conditions
- Annual base salary range: $295,250–$345,040 USD. Actual base pay depends on professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs, and market demand, and may fall outside the stated range. The range may change. Full-time employees are eligible for equity compensation and benefits.
- For office-based roles, onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday, unless otherwise noted.
- For US-based roles, the company may be unable to employ candidates whose US work authorization is related to certain US visa categories or support future H-1B sponsorship at this time.
