Responsibilities
- Collaborate with combat, systems, narrative, art, engineering, audio, and production teams to create levels that reinforce the game's creative vision and core gameplay pillars.
- Own levels end-to-end, from early concepts and layouts through blockouts, implementation, iteration, and final polish.
- Design engaging combat spaces that accommodate varied enemies, character builds, abilities, positioning strategies, and approaches to combat.
- Build compelling exploration experiences through optional paths, secrets, environmental storytelling, and meaningful rewards while maintaining intuitive navigation and progression.
- Design encounter pacing, traversal, player flow, environmental composition, and progression to create satisfying and memorable gameplay experiences.
- Script and implement gameplay events, objectives, triggers, encounters, and environmental interactions directly within the game engine.
- Prototype, test, debug, and iterate rapidly based on playtesting and feedback, improving combat flow, difficulty, pacing, readability, and replayability.
- Independently identify and solve complex level design challenges while balancing creative goals, gameplay quality, technical constraints, and production requirements.
- Apply strong design judgment throughout development and contribute to establishing and maintaining a high quality standard for playable content.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional game development experience, including significant experience designing and implementing levels for action, RPG, or combat-focused games.
- Experience shipping multiple game titles, including at least one project in a senior or equivalent level design position.
- Demonstrated ability to independently take complex levels from initial concept and blockout through implementation, iteration, and final polish.
- Strong understanding of action RPG level design principles, including combat spaces, encounter pacing, exploration, progression, player guidance, navigation, and replayability.
- Strong hands-on experience with level editors, gameplay scripting, and in-engine implementation, with the ability to prototype, debug, test, and iterate efficiently.
- Strong design instincts and judgment, with the ability to make thoughtful decisions that balance player experience, creative direction, technical limitations, and production realities.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working effectively across multidisciplinary development teams.
- Passion for action RPGs featuring combat, character builds, loot, progression, and exploration.
- Experience designing for an isometric or elevated gameplay camera, including an understanding of its effects on combat readability, navigation, spatial composition, and player awareness, is an asset.
- Experience creating replayable content that supports different character builds, abilities, difficulty settings, or repeated playthroughs is an asset.
- Strong understanding of systemic combat and how level geometry, enemy composition, hazards, and interactive elements can combine to create varied encounters.
- Experience designing dungeons, interconnected environments, procedural or modular content, or other repeatable gameplay spaces is a plus.
- Strong instincts for environmental storytelling, gameplay readability, polish, and identifying opportunities to improve player experiences through iteration.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and currently reside within Canada.
Conditions
- Annual salary of $115,000–$149,500, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.
